Curriculum and Learning Resources

At American Academy School (AAS), we strive to provide an enthusiastic environment where students collaborate, think creatively, innovate, communicate effectively and be global citizens.  The curriculum provides a framework where the students can explore, experiment, and understand by hands on learning.

At AAS, the Elementary curriculum is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards in English Language, Arts and Mathematics.  We also follow the Next Generation Science Standards and provide hands on science investigations to engage students in their exploration of science. The core subjects include English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, ICT, Qatar History and Arabic.  Along with the core subjects we have specialist subjects like Art, Music and PE.

The American curriculum followed at AAS is based on high standards of achievement in all subject areas. AAS encourages student centered approach with a focus on inquiry-based learning. This broad and balanced approach is supported by a wide range of co-curricular activities which equip all students with the skills they need for the 21st century.

Curricular and Extra Curricular Activities

In AAS Elementary, high-quality, standards-based physical education instruction helps students learn not only the skills and knowledge to be physically fit and active, but it also gives them the confidence and positive attitude necessary to participate in physical activities.  This also inculcates team building skills.

At AAS, we encourage natural curiosity and creativity and provide many opportunities for expressive learning including arts, origami, music, drama, and story telling. Children enjoy drawing, painting, and cutting, and pasting. They use different materials and techniques to make art creations that reflect thoughts, feelings, experiences, or knowledge.

Music brings positive effect on the students’ brain, enhance creativity and emotional skills.  Students apply vocal and instrumental musical skills in performing a varied repertoire of music. They arrange music and improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments. In addition, they apply what they learn in music across subject areas. They develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication, and management of time and resources that contribute to lifelong learning and career skills.

Field Trips

At AAS, we believe that field trips add relevance to learning and social skills.  It enhances and expands the curriculum.  It increases the student’s knowledge, strengthens observation and perception skills.  Several children don’t get to experience the typical field trip locations with their families. A school trip gives students the chance to experience new venues. Some of the field trips we consider at AAS:

  • Zoo
  • Bakery
  • Fire Station
  • Grocery Store
  • Library
  • Park
  • Animal Shelter
  • Museums

SEN/Support

American Academy School welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and learning profile.  We have specialized intervention and support teachers who endeavors to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of every student.  We believe that every student has the potential to be motivated, challenged and acquire the necessary skills.

Our experience with the students of special needs and the teachers reveals that we need to tailor the curriculum and the strategies that will be used with them, in addition to the resources and learning methods, in order to fulfill their needs.

Our teachers and SEN teacher work in consistency with parents and specialists, and local authority services to implement IEP’s, activities and evaluation in termly basis, to review the quality of work and support they provide to students.

Our Elementary Teachers work closely with parents and provide information on how they support children with SEN and slow learners, regularly reviewing and evaluating the quality and breadth of the support they offer or can access. They also work in partnership with the local authority such as Sidra and other services or specialists where required.
